11/8: Day 7: Out of oysters

Photographer Bobby Moon of Los, Gatos, Calif., spent Eight Days in the Gulf last month to highlight what was happening in the region six months after the Gulf oil disaster.

Moon, whose other projects can be found here, and Frank Brightwell offered these insights on Day Seven, Oct. 24, which was spent in and around Venice and Port Sulphur, La., :

“The day started with coffee at the Riverside Restaurant. There, Sissy was happy to answer our questions about the oil leak and its impact on this small community. Most of the recent customers were people working on the clean up, we learned. Good people, hard working people. But none of them are local. “They laid off my husband after four days.” From her perspective, two things were important: “My husband and I are still waiting for our check,” she said. “And I just want the truth sometimes. I just want to know what’s going on.” And that was our sentiment as well. For the past twenty-four hours, we felt that we were not getting the whole story. It was as if a veil had been draped over the entire community and we were on the wrong side. What is the story? Where lies the truth?”
