6/22: Trapped

Isle Grand Terre, La. Copyright RSAirPhoto.com. Used by permission.

Photographer Richard Shephard captured this dramatic photo of an increasing pond of oil trapped between the shore and a sandbar off Isle Grand Terre, La., on June 12.

On his Web site, he makes these observations about what he calls “BP’s Forgotten Isle:”

“From the air, Grand Terre’s verdent green interior, tide pools, marshes, coastal dunes and beaches are a truly captivating sight. At an altitude of one thousand feet, it’s easy to dream of lazy days and barefoot beachcoming. At five hundred feet, however, one is shocked into reality. The sight and smell of oil begins to depress the senses. Fly even lower, as low and slow as a pelican, and the view is mind-numbing.”
