Photographer Richard Shephard of Cummington, Mass., offers this dramatic photo of a pelican rescued at Bay Chaland, La., on June 4.

In a brief interview today, Shephard recalled how recovery workers who were rescuing oiled birds were making a concentrated effort to help as many birds as possible.

“There was an atmosphere of trying to do something without the Tom-foolery [from some officials] we see on a daily basis.”

When asked about the magnitude of the oiled birds he’s seen in Louisiana, he said there probably have been a hundred rescued, but a lot more that won’t be rescued.  “It’s just hard to say.”
